Indirect Painting in Oil Painting

In addition to direct painting, Large Abstract Canvas Art also has indirect painting. Indirect painting generally uses the transparency of oil painting media, also known as transparent painting. Now let’s look at the indirect painting of oil painting.

Indirect painting: The traditional technique of Western classical Modern Wall Art, which uses the transparency of oil painting media and covers the painted objects one or more times on the basis of monochrome modeling, to achieve the realistic effect of the painted objects, is also called transparent painting.

The European classical realistic style Extra Large Modern Painting generally refers to the realistic painting style in the early Renaissance of the 14th century and the French neoclassical period of the 19th century, which is the mainstream painting style with the longest duration in Europe. Generally speaking, the oil paintings of classical realistic style mainly focus on rigorous realistic modeling. The main techniques used by the inherent color are the classical multi-layer transparent painting and multi-layer mixed painting.

Classical indirect painting, also known as multi-layer transparent painting, has a long history and is an ancient method of traditional European painting. European Daniela painting techniques and early oil painting generally used this method of painting. It takes advantage of the transparency of resin varnish and the fast drying speed to dye one layer of color on another layer separately. The lower layer color and the upper layer color produce another color through the physical mixing of light refraction. The color we see is actually a visual mixing, just like the layers of colored transparent glass stacked together. So European classical indirect painting refers to the separation of shape and color in the process of painting.

The transparent technique of early Big Abstract Painting is to shape the relationship between light and shade with monochrome after finalizing the outline of single line drawing, and then to cover it with simple transparent color. This is also the most basic indirect painting method. Later, with the progress and maturity of the relationship between light and shade and modeling technology, it gradually developed into a painting technique of making complete sketch with a single color, and finally covered with one or more transparent colors. Classical realistic style of oil painting emphasizes the realism and rigor of reproduction and modelling. Whether once or many times the color mask dyeing must be subordinate to the shape and modelling. The greatest feature of transparent painting is to separate the shaping of the shape from the shading and dyeing of the color mask, so that we can concentrate calmly on solving the shaping and then consider the color problem. Therefore, the shape of the manuscript should be accurate, affirmative, rigorous and avoid modifying the body when it is covered and dyed.

The indirect painting of oil paintings can basically be divided into two major categories: the White cover dyeing method and the shaping cover dyeing method.

The whitening mask dyeing method is to make an intermediate layer after the final draft of the picture. The intermediate layer can be processed according to the needs of the picture and whitened from the bright part of the picture with translucent or opaque white on the middle layer. Shadow transparency should be guaranteed as far as possible, and darkness can be deepened appropriately according to need. The black-and-white layers of the finished picture should be more intense. The overall effect should be complete. After drying, the cockroaches are covered with translucent or transparent colors. This rich relationship between the shape of the picture and the unified color gives rise to the unique texture and harmonious aesthetic feeling of indirect painting, transparent, implicit, crystal and translucent, whitening in the process of painting is to shape the coverlet dyeing in order to solve the color problem. This method alternates the whitening of opaque color with the covering dyeing of transparent color, so as to obtain the rigor and depth of shape and color.

Shaping mask dyeing method is to use monochrome on the white or colored background after the final draft of the picture, but the color and shade contrast of the picture should leave room for the later cover dyeing. The light-dark relationship of the whole picture is shallower than the normal black-white-grey. After shaping the picture, the screen is further perfected by cover dyeing, and the brighter part before cover dyeing is reaching the visual appropriateness through repeated cover dyeing of color. This method also separates shaping from covering dyeing, and the color is accomplished by transparent, translucent and opaque layers. Of course, different artists in different periods or in the same period have different uses of indirect painting due to different aesthetic tastes. It is not simply done in one way. Their common feature is that the shape and color are processed separately, and the final visual mixing is achieved through repeated overlap and penetration of transparent and opaque layers. Therefore, it is not a one-time direct drawing of the shape and color of the image, but a number of multi-level, indirect completion of the work.
